Marty's Visit

Today for news John brought his pet cat Marty to visit our classroom.

John got him from the SPCA and he is four and a half months old. Marty has a microchip under his skin so if he gets lost you can find out where he lives. He is called Marty because John's cousin's cat is called Marty as well and they look the same.
The cat has soft fluffy fur and he's got little claws. He looks like Ellie's cat Spuddy. He is a tabby and he has black and grey stripes.

Here is another story of Matariki.

Friday's Assembly

What a great job everyone did at Friday's assembly. We got a lot of congratulations from the other teachers.
So well done everyone! Especially those who covered the gaps for those who had to go home sick after lunch.

Shrink the Solar System

Today we shrank the sun to the size of a marble. All the rocky planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) are close to the sun. All the gas planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) are further away.  Even at this scale Neptune was still 45.26m away from the sun. Charlie
Caleb and John worked out that the nearest star (Alpha Centauri) to the sun would be near Te Kauwhata. It is only slightly bigger than the sun and is 406km away!

Your job is to find Te Kauwhata on a map.

Solar Flares

Today Amelia shared news about solar flares. We looked at some videos from You Tube and this is our favourite.
Dominic liked it when the flares were so huge.
The flares looked like a big wave crashing down - Charlie

Phases of the Moon

Here is an activity to try at home from our friend Bill Nye. A great way to see the different phases of the moon.

Baseball Moon (pdf)

To help you remember the names for the different phases of the moon here is a rap!

We Visit The Dowse

Yesterday Room 1, 2 and 3 visited the Dowse Gallery.
First we heard an extraordinary storyteller called Jen. She told us the story of Ranginui and Papatuanuku, which is a Maori story about how the world was made. Then she told us the story of Matariki. She also showed some carvings on the pataka (Nuku Tewhatewha).

The we went to the workshop where Anna showed us how to make collages about Matariki. We put on the sky (Ranginui) and the land (Papatuanuku) the added some korus to represent ourselves and an adult from our family.

Your Weight and Age on Other Planets

We looked at how much we would weigh and how old we would be on other planets. I'm moving to Mars!!
Caleb wants to move to the moon.
Sara wants to move to Pluto because its been raining all weekend.
Alex wants to move to Venus because then she'll be 12.
Antonia and Scarlett want to go to Jupiter because they will be younger and will age more slowly.

Exploding Egg Experiment

Here is the video of our experiment from the beginning of the term.

Fantastic work on the video Rhianne!

I liked it the next time when the egg sunk down into the bottle slowly. - Dominic
It stunk like rotten eggs after. - Caleb

Mathletics Abuse

Here is a light-hearted article for parents about Mathletics. There is a serious message underneath though - if we are to use Mathletics as a tool for learning then the work done should be completed by the person who's account it is. We learn as much, if not more, from our mistakes as we do from our successes.
I can see that some students are completing work that they cannot do in class.... So please help and support your child when they are on Mathletics and monitor if older siblings or friends are using their account. That said the odd game of Mathletics Live at 11pm is as always at your discretion.

Welcome To 1derful 1's

Welcome to Room 1's new blogsite. This is most definitely a work in progress and will grow and change as I learn more about using Blogger.
It has two main purposes;
The first is to communicate and share with parents, family, whanau and the wider school community. We can share what we have been learning in class, videos we have looked at (like the one below) and work we have done.
The second is to share ideas and links to help with students' learning and encourage discussion at home.

Bill Nye Demonstrates the Distance Between Planets

Bill Nye is great. He is great at explaining big ideas for children.
