Kiwiana

This week we have been learning about Kiwiana - those things that are distinctly New Zealand.

Our list has included:

  • Living things - kiwi, weta, tui, silver fern, paua, tuatara, and pohutukawa.
  • Maori Culture - haka, pounamu and koru patterns.
  • Places - the Beehive, the Cake Tin and Aoraki/Mt Cook.
  • Things and Inventions - pavlova, L&P, electric fence, jandals and Buzzy Bee.
Here's a link to New Zealand's 'official' Kiwiana town - Otorohanga. A good place to learn more about Kiwiana and some of the icons of New Zealand culture.

Paper Plane Competition Update

With the breeze it is hard to say if the 'Time in the Air' competition will go ahead. I think we will be ok for the distance attempts though.

Pack The Bus

On Wednesday we had pack the bus. The bus arrived and we took our toys, food and toiletries on to the bus.

When we came off we were entertained by a ukelele band singing Christmas songs.

We even got to meet the Big Guy in Red!!

Thanks to everyone who provided goods. I'm sure they will be appreciated by those in need this Christmas.

The Great Room 1 Paper Plane Fly Off

The Great Room 1 Paper Plane Fly Off is coming!

We will be having our competition this Friday straight after morning tea (10.40) weather permitting.

The following categories will be judged:

  • Longest Distance - this is a straight line flight to where it lands. If it curls around and lands by your feet that's how far it went.
  • Time In The Air - how long can your dart stay in the air? We will time it using a stopwatch.
  • Best Looking - the best decorated plane. It still needs to start off being a folded paper plane, where it ends up is .....
  • Biggest - what is the biggest dart you can make? You still need to be able to hold it and throw it (even if you can just throw it).
  • Smallest - the smallest folded paper plane you can make.
The first two competitions are the most weather dependent. We need a dry day that is fairly still, especially for the time in air competition. Any postponements will be on the blog.

Paper plane 2

Here is a link to a website that has the instructions for 10 paper plane designs.

The one called 'The Champ' is the world record holder for the longest flight time - 27.6 seconds.

Paper plane !

In preparation for Friday I will put up some designs and instructions. This one has a video demonstration as well.
A good one to make with someone older to help the first time.
Don't forget to comment on the blog to let everyone know how your plane went.

Nick's Paper Airplane Folding Instructions

  • DIG. 1diagram
    1
Firstly fold the sheet in half along the line shown in DIG. 1 and then open it out again.
  • DIG. 2diagram
    2
Fold the two top corners in to the center line to give the form in DIG. 2
  • DIG. 3diagram
    3
Then fold the top large triangle over so that the two flaps formed in step 2 are underneath the large triangle. Your paper should now look like DIG. 3
  • DIG. 4diagram
    4
From the form in DIG. 3 fold the two top corners into the center line again in such a way that you get the form in DIG. 4
  • DIG. 5diagram
    5
Now fold the small triangle up over the two flaps to give DIG. 5
  • DIG. 6diagram
    6
Fold along the center line so that the small triangle is on the underside of the plane on the outside along with the two flaps as shown in DIG. 6
  • DIG. 7diagram
    7
Fold along the line AB on DIG. 6 then turn the plane over and do the same to the other side producing DIG. 7.
  • DIG. 8diagram
    8
Fold along the line labelled AB on the diagram first one way and then the other creasing really well. Tuck the triangular shaped depression inbetween the two wings to produce DIG. 8. This stabilises the plane if you do not make it perfectly since to make it absolutely symmetrically is beyond my abilities.
