Making a Thermometer.

Here is a video showing how to make a thermometer just like we did on Friday. 

We skipped the part where she makes a hole in the bottle lid and instead used a large amount of blu-tac to block the top of the bottle and make it airtight. Play-doh or modeling clay would work just as well.

Using a normal drink straw also meant that we didn't need the 'lolly stick' either.

Chop Suey - Yummy Yummy

On Monday Tiana brought Room 1 a surprise for lunch - Chop Suey!
Chop Suey is also called Sapusui in Samoa. It is a dish you will find at most Samoan celebrations.

Thank you very much Tiana (and Tiana's husband) from all of Room 1 for our delicious treat - the bowl was scraped clean.

Black Out Day

Last Friday was Black Out Day in support of the All Blacks for their game against France.

It seemed to have a good effect on the All Blacks! We had fun too.

Room 1 is in a Black mood!

The teachers are as well.

New Feature

I have just learnt how to add a 'page' to our blog.
Under the title there is a white line - anything on there is a page where we can post documents such as publishing or information to share with parents. Just click on the word and you will be taken to the page.

I have posted the words to Savalivali and the calls for the clapping for you to practice at home.

Gail and Tiana

On Thursday Room 1 had two special visitors - Gail and Tiana - who came to teach us about Samoa.
They answered lots of questions about living in Samoa and we learnt lots of things like:

• it's hot and muggy (Amelia)
• it's a tropical country (Antonia)
• the most popular animals are pigs and chickens (Caleb)
• there is lots of tropical fruit in Samoa (Scarlett)
• that bat tastes like burnt chicken (Patrick)
• boys wear lavalavas as well as girls but they are shorter (Alex)
• the buses are very different, people pile on and strangers sit in your lap and there is lots of loud music (Antonia)
• the two main islands are Upolo and Savai'i (Terran)

Gail and Tiana also taught us a song Savalivali Means Go For a Walk. They taught us a clapping game and how to wear a lavalava.

Our Animal Friends

I am a bit behind posting on our blog. Here are some of our animal friends who have visited Room 1 over the last few weeks (and months!).

Most recently we were visited by Sash - a lovely black labrador weimaraner cross brought in by Adam. She was quite shy - especially of the camera. I had to be a bit sneaky.

You can see her Weimaraner eyes and ears.

Earlier we were visited by Fireworks and Diamond - two quiet guinea pigs who came to school with Sara.

We were also visited by two goats - Perky and her kid Toby. Perky is short for Perky Nana and Toby is short for Toblerone. They were brought by Aaron. We even got to see Toby get breakfast from his mum.

Well done Caleb again. Samoa are playing Namibia at Rotorua today.
The boys are starting a comeback - it's now 4 - 2 to the girls.
